...a brief history

"The real origin and essence of the hypnotic condition is the induction of a habit of abstraction or mental concentration, in which, as in reverie or spontaneous abstraction, the powers of the mind are so much engrossed with a single idea or train of thought, as, for the nonce, to render the individual unconscious of, or indifferently conscious to, all other ideas, impressions, or trains of thought."

-  James Braid, 1852

Franz Anton Mesmer
1734 - 1815

Mesmer developed a theory and created a practice he termed “animal magnetism” (later known as Mesmerism) in which he believed that an invisible, magnetic fluid permeated the universe and could be manipulated for healing purposes. Today, we know his theories are untrue, and see them actually as ludicrous, yet even Benjamin Franklin, who was one of the learned experts on a panel, tasked by King Louis XVI to audit him, felt that his results were undeniable. What's clear is that Mesmer was getting actual positive results, he was just incorrect about what was causing the them. He was getting positive results because he was unknowingly practicing what we currently refer to as hypnosis.
